Landscape revival Ways to add some intrigue to your backyard

(NC)-Latest outdoor space design trends. 2008 is all about Natural Life - a style that brings together calming elements like rich, burnished woods, tactile rattan-style resin and a colour palette of teak, java, sand and coral. Use a monochromatic palette of neutral stone, wood and linen, then punch it up with colourful outdoor cushions, planters and an area rug in an eye-catching print.

Perfect planting. Planters provide a crowning touch to your outdoor space. The latest styles update the classics with rustic terra cotta, bronze verdigris and classic cast iron finishes leading the trend in sturdy, low-maintenance fibreglass.

Urban pond. Few things soothe as effectively as the sound of trickling water from a simple potted pond. Start by choosing a pretty ceramic or resin pot and fit it with a fountain kit. Place it on your deck, patio or even in an indoor sunroom, add water, river stones and plants, and then just plug it in.

Light the way. Few things add as much design for your money as landscape lighting. Besides ensuring safety and directing foot traffic, path lights illuminate beautiful details in your flowerbeds and garden. Consider low-voltage and solar-powered models to add style and function without costing the planet.

Open-air cuisine. One of the biggest backyard trends this year is the deluxe chef's kitchen. A covered cooking area with ample counter space, refrigeration units, and a top of the line barbecue will keep the household chef happy outdoors while a casual bar area will encourage guests to sit and chat.
