It's the unavoidable chore none of us like to do: laundry. Not only is it a tedious necessity of life but unfortunately, today's large capacity washers and dryers also leave a major carbon footprint. While we all know that washing in cold water instead of hot is more earth-friendly, there's more you can do. Here are some tips to help you do your part when it's wash day. The bonus? You'll also save money.
- If you are in the market for a new dryer, look for one that comes with a 'moisture sensor' which shuts the dryer off as soon as the load is dry. Otherwise, monitor the dryer to ensure you aren't over drying your laundry, which also leads to static cling.
- Check the lint trap on your dryer after every load. Not only does this save energy by making your dryer work more efficiently, but it can prevent a fire.
- Use a drying rack for items that don't need to go in the dryer. The innovative new Quick Dry Garment Drying Station from Hamilton Beach has a built-in fan that distributes cool air onto your clothes, drying them up to 75 per cent faster than a regular rack and it uses less energy than an average light bulb. - Before drying, separate clothing and dry similar fabrics together. Synthetics dry faster than natural fabrics and towels.
